Texas Tax Exemption for Red Temporary Dealer Tags Notice: The new format includes a required unique sequential number. This number is to appear on all tags (motorcycles, trailers, etc.) in all colors. The dealer is required to record the tag number and be able to identify where or to whom that tag was issued. For example, the red buyer's tag will have a tag number assigned to the buyer of the vehicle and this should be reflected in the dealer's records. The record of the control numbers may be kept in any reasonable commercial manner as long as the dealer is able to give information when a investigator askes as to the assignment of a certain numbered tag on any particular date. In the case of a red tag, the information contained on the tag may be kept in the sales file. In the case of a black tag, it may be assigned to either a particular vehicle (identified by the VIN) or to a person, e.g. a sales person.
